Apple’s A9 chips which will be used in the next generation iPhone is set to be manufactured by Samsung. Samsung has won back this contract after losing it in the last year.
Samsung and Apple are the biggest rivals in the smartphone world and it comes as a big surprise that Samsung has won this contract back. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) manufactured the A8 chips due to the bitter patent dispute between Apple and Samsung.
Apple A9 chips will be manufactured at Samsung’s Giheung plant in South Korea. Additional orders will go to Samsung’s partner Globalfoundries.
“If the Globalfoundries quickly adopts Samsung’s most advanced technology and increases yield, it could also win orders from Qualcomm,” said Song Myung Sup, analyst at HI Investment & Securities Co.
Apple has started planning for the next generation iPhone. Rumour has it that the next generation device will be called the iPhone 7 with Apple set to skip the iPhone 6S name.
