All those of you who wanted to Root their Sony Xperia Ray ST18i without unlocking their bootloaders and weren’t able to do the same earlier; With the update to Android Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.4 it is possible to root the phone without unlocking bootloaders.

Note: This process is also applicable to most other Smartphones of the Sony Xperia series. For other Xperia devices the same process applies, the only difference is that they can directly jump to Step 2, skipping Step 1 and Step 3

Disclaimer: By following this tutorial you agree that the Rooting process will be at your own risk. No member of this site will be responsible for any bricked phones!

Here is a Quick Tutorial for any novice user to root their Xperia Ray ST18i:

Enable the USB Debugging mode by checking the box in your device Settings, by going to:

Settings >> Applications >> Development >> USB Debugging

It is highly recommended that you backup all your Contacts and SMSs as well as all your apps.

  • Super Backup App can help in backing up all your SMSs, Contacts as well as Call logs.
  • Titanium backup is a good App to back up your apps.

Download the following files:

Once all the required files are downloaded, install the ADB driver as well as the Flashtool. Extract the Rooting package in the (C:\)C drive. Remember that you have to Downgrade your Firmware to ICS 4.0.3 to Root your device, but you can easily upgrade back later! (we have covered all the details for the upgrade too)

Step 1: Downgrade to ICS 4.0.3:

  • Run the Flashtool (Run as an Administrator).
  • Navigate C:\flashtool\firmwares Directory. Delete all the data present in that directory.
  • Copy the ICS 4.0.3 Firmware (4.1.A.0.562) into this directory.
  • Now click on the Flash and select Flashmode. A window will appear that will look like this:Firmware selection
  • Press OK and a window will pop up that will instruct you to unplug the device, power it OFF and then reconnect it while pressing the Volume Down button.
  • Keep pressing the button till the downgrading process is complete. Once you see the finished process message you can unplug the device and power ON the device.

Step 2: Actual Rooting Process

  • Now extract the rooting package to a folder on desktop.
  • Simply run the runme.bat file. It will look like this:
    Root Package
  • Follow the instructions on screen.
  • In this process, your device may Reboot a couple of times. It is normal, no need to worry!
  • Once the window displays an “All done” message you can unplug the device

Step 3: Upgrading back to 4.0.4

  • Run the Flashtool (with Administrator privileges)
  • This process is similar to the Downgrading process.
  • Navigate C:\flashtool\firmwares directory. Delete all the data present in this directory.
  • Copy the ICS 4.0.4 Firmware (4.1.B.0.431) into this directory.
  • Now click on the Flash and select Flashmode.
    Upgrade Firmware to 4.0.4 selection
  • Press OK and a window will pop up that will instruct you to unplug the device, power it OFF and then reconnect it while pressing the Volume Down button.
  • Keep pressing the button till the downgrading process is complete. Once you see the finished process message you can unplug the device and power on the device.

CONGRATULATIONS! You have successfully rooted your Sony Xperia Ray ST18i. If you get stuck at any part of the process you can feel free to post your problem in the comments below, we’ll try our best to reply back ASAP.

    is there any dangerous

    • Posted September 29, 2012 at 4:41 pm | Permalink

Jason, this process is fairly simple as well as safe. However in very rare cases, if the instructions aren’t followed properly or the required files aren’t downloaded properly the phone can get bricked. So please be careful in those regards.

plz why you ftf file size is so small ? Unlike ftf file that upload in other site ! their file size is over hundred MB ?

        • Posted October 24, 2012 at 7:52 am | Permalink

I know ftf files in other sites are huge that is because they contain the entire firmwares. But for this process you require to downgrade only the kernel, hence this ftf is packaged only with the kernel and nothing else. It has been done for your convenience so that you save some bandwidth.

Will this process also work with android build number 4.1.B.0.587 on my Xperia ray?

Yes, it should work with 4.1.B.0.587 too.

Do you know where then can I download the new 4.1.B.0.587 firmware file to upgrade back to? I have searched on the net but haven’t found anything that useful. I don’t really want to downgrade the firmware on my ray…

        • Posted February 3, 2013 at 2:52 pm | Permalink

the firmware I have provided only includes kernel. The kernels for both the firmware are same, so you don’t really downgrade your ray.

did you install Sony PC companion? if not install that too. Also, when the tutorial tells you to power off the phone and connect to PC with the volume button down pressed does the LED turn green??

Yes I’ve installed Sony PC companion – I updated my ray to ICS with it. However when I try and downgrade my ray, flashtool brings up a picture of a different xperia model and tells me to hold down the backspace instead on pressing the volume down button. I press the volume down button instead and the LED does turn green. Also, when I connect my phone with debugging on – flashtool says “Device connected with USB
debugging off” even though the USB debugging is on… Also, I am trying this on a different computer with windows 8 and am having exactly the same trouble.

          • Posted February 11, 2013 at 2:36 pm | Permalink

Yes though flashtools displays another device pressing the volume button down is the correct method. The LED is supposed to turn green. Make sure you have installed the adb drivers from the folder: Flashtools/drivers/
