The Samsung Galaxy Gear was launched last month along with the Galaxy Note 3. The Gear is a smartwatch that acts as an extension of your smartphone. It allows you to take calls, send texts, and perform various other tasks from your wrist without touching your phone. It only supports the Galaxy Note 3 and 10.1 at the moment but is expected to work with more devices later. Its feature include a 800 MHz single-core ARM processor, 1.63″ Super AMOLED display, 512 MB RAM and 4 GB internal storage, 1.9 MP camera and Bluetooth 4.0.

There are two ways of installing apps on your Galaxy Gear: installing app via ADB and installing app via third party tool. However, as the Gear does not have a SIM card or data connection of its own, only those apps that do not require a data connection will work on it.

Installing app via ADB:

In this method, we will use the Android Debug Bridge (ADB) which can be found in the Android SDK to install apps on the Galaxy Gear.

  • Android SDK installed on your computer
  • USB debugging enabled on your Galaxy Gear

  1. Connect your Gear to your computer via USB. Ensure that USB debugging has been enabled on your Gear from the Settings menu.
  2. Download on your computer the apk file of the app that you want to install.
  3. Open command window in the same location where you have downloaded the apk and type the following command:
    ADB install [filename]
  4. That’s it. You should see the app on your Galaxy Gear after a few moments.

Installing app via third party tool (Wondershare MobileGo):

In this method, we will use Wondershare MobileGo, a third party tool, to install apps on your Galaxy Gear.

  1.  Download and install Wondershare MobileGo on your computer. You can either download the trial version which is applicable for 14 days or buy the paid version.
  2. Connect your Gear to your computer via USB. Ensure that USB debugging has been enabled on your Gear from the Settings menu.
  3. Wondershare MobileGo will download the necessary drivers required for the Gear and will identify the connected device as Samsung SM-V700. A Wondershare MobileGo app will also be installed on your Gear.
  4. Now click on the “Google Play Apps” tab located on the left hand side and you can start installing the apps that you want from the Play Store.
  5. Note however that you should not sign in on Google Play as this will install apps only on your registered devices. As a result of this however, you can only install free apps from the Play Store and not the paid ones.

You can try any of the above mentioned methods for installing apps on your Galaxy Gear. The first method requires you to first search and download the apk files of the apps whereas the second method allows you to install only free apps. Choose the method that suits you the most and enjoy using your Galaxy Gear as a separate Android device in itself.
