How To Download and Install CyanogenMod 10 on the Samsung Galaxy S 3

All those who have been waiting for a Custom ROM with Android 4.1 (jellybean) for the Galaxy S3, here is the CyanogenMod 10. It has been made possible with the efforts of our friend XpLoDWilD, at XDA developers forum.

CyanogenMod 10

Before you are ready to flash the CyanogenMod 10 ROM into your system, you have to root your device! Check out the Rooting Guide of Galaxy S III among my previous articles.

DISCLAIMER: Please note that even though the process is quite safe, flashing any file is at your own risk. We cannot be held responsible for any damaged devices!

WARNING: This version of CM10 is yet an experimental version with some bugs. No stable versions are yet available!

Known Issues in the Firmware:

  • FM radio not working
  • Camera is a little unstable
  • WiFi tethering is semi-working
  • Some Audio issues
  • Transparency issues on home screen

Requirements:

  • Download the latest CyanogenMod 10 file from here. It is the file to be flashed on your phone!
  • Download the Gapps zip file from here
  • And some patience!

This process is quite safe but it is advisable to do a NANDroid back up of the system before continuing. If you’re continuing with this tutorial, I assume you already have a rooted device. If you aren’t sure if you’re fully rooted, use this App.

Step-by-step procedure to be followed:

  1. Place both the zip files in root of SDcard.
  2. For NANDroid backup enter into Recovery mode. To enter Recovery Mode, Press and Hold the Volume-Down button, Home button, and the Power buttons together for 20 seconds.
  3. To make a NANDroid backup, navigate to Backup and Restore option and select Backup.
  4. Once your Backup is complete, let’s proceed..
  5. In Recovery Mode, select Factory Reset.
  6. Then go to Advanced and select Wipe Dalvik cache.
  7. Then navigate to install zip from SDcard.
  8. First flash the CM10 file, once the process is complete flash the Gapps file by the same process.
  9. Select Reboot System to boot for the first time after flashing.

TIP: The first boot after flashing may take some time. So be patient! If it takes more than 10 minutes, pull out the battery and power ON again.

If the device is stuck in a bootloop, repeat steps 5 to 9! Even after repeating the process, if the bootloops continue, then restore from the NANDroid backup which was created at the start of the tutorial!
