Google’s latest Nexus device, the Nexus 5, was launched last week along with the Android 4.4 version of their Android OS. The smartphone has a 4.95-inch 1920×1080 display, 2.3 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 2 GB of RAM and 16 and 32 GB internal storage. It also has a 8 MP rear camera and 1.3 MP front facing camera. It has a 2300 mAh battery along with integrated wireless charging.

We have already seen how you can root this device. Let us now proceed in unlocking its bootloader. There are two methods by which you can do this: by one click script or manually unlocking. You can choose any of the two methods depending on the one you are comfortable with.

Steps to unlock bootloader via one click script:

  1. Download the bootloader unlocking zip file and extract the folder inside the zip to your computer.
  2. Connect your device to your computer via USB cable. Ensure that USB debugging has been enabled on your device.
  3. Now double click on the “1-click-nexus-5-bootloader-unlock.bat” file from the folder that you extracted in step 1.
  4. The script will start executing and will ask you for confirmation on unlocking the bootloader.
  5. Confirm that you want to unlock the bootloader and after a few moments, your Nexus 5 will be bootloader unlocked.

Steps to unlock bootloader manually:

  1. Download the bootloader unlocking zip file and extract the folder inside the zip to your computer.
  2. Turn off your device and boot into bootloader mode. You can do this by pressing and holding Volume Down and Power buttons until the bootloader menu appears.
  3. Connect your device to your computer via USB cable.
  4. Now go to the folder that you extracted in step 1 and open the command prompt window there by pressing Shift button of the keyboard and Right Click button of mouse and choosing “open command prompt window here”.
  5. Now type the following command:
    fastboot devices
  6. This command ensures that your device has been detected. If it has not been detected, reinstall the Nexus 5 device drivers and try again.
  7. Next type the following command to unlock your bootloader:
    fastboot oem unlock
  8. Finally confirm that you want to unlock the bootloader.
