Soon after Google released the Android 4.4.1 update for the Nexus 4, a minor update has now started rolling out which further brings about some fixes and improvements to the Android KitKat OS. Android 4.4.2 enhances security and fixes some bugs related to the VM Indicator. The update can be directly downloaded and installed via OTA if you are on stock Android 4.4 or stock Android 4.4.1. If you haven’t yet received it via OTA, you can manually install it by following the below steps.

Pre-requisites and Backing up your Nexus 4:

Method 1 (via Custom Recovery):

Requirements:

  • Nexus 4 must be running on either stock Android 4.4 KRT16S or stock Android 4.4.1 KOT49E
  • Rooted Nexus 4
  • Latest CWM or TWRP custom recovery installed
  • Official Android 4.4.2 update zip file (Download this file if you are on stock Android 4.4 KRT16S / Download this file if you are on stock Android 4.4.1 KOT49E)

Steps:

  1. Download the official Android 4.4.2 update zip file and copy it to the root of the internal storage of your Nexus 4.
  2. Turn off the device and boot into recovery mode. To do this, follow the below steps:
    A. Press and hold the volume up, volume down and power button simultaneously.
    B. Use the volume up or down buttons until you see Recovery on the screen and then press the power button to boot into it.
  3. Now select “install zip”, then “select zip” and choose the Android 4.4.2 update zip file.
  4. Reboot your device after the installation is completed.

Your Nexus 4 has been successfully updated to Android 4.4.2.

Method 2 (via ADB):

Requirements:

  • Nexus 4 must be running on either stock Android 4.4 KRT16S or stock Android 4.4.1 KOT49E
  • Android SDK installed on your computer
  • Official Android 4.4.2 update zip file (Download this file if you are on stock Android 4.4 KRT16S / Download this file if you are on stock Android 4.4.1 KOT49E)

Steps:

  1. Download the official Android 4.4.2 update zip file to your computer.
  2. Now reboot your device and while it is booting up, press and hold the Volume Down button.
  3. You will now see the fastboot menu. Press the Volume Up button until you see Recovery and then enter it by pressing the Power button.
  4. An Android with a red exclamation point will now appear on the screen. Press Volume Up and Power buttons together and select “apply update from adb”.
  5. Connect your device to your computer via USB.
  6. Now go to the location where you downloaded the official Android 4.4.2 update zip file and open a command window there by pressing Shift button of the keyboard and Right Click button of your mouse.
  7. Type the following code if coming from stock Android 4.4:
    adb sideload 4f6d2fc7377dbb48caecaa658bb139da2b063b33.signed-occam-KOT49H-from-KRT16S.4f6d2fc7.zip

    Type the following code if coming from stock Android 4.4.1:
    adb sideload 0ec632f54ab860d02907f090ba0a8d2c16ef74f9.signed-occam-KOT49H-from-KOT49E.0ec632f5.zip

  8. The update will now be installed on your device. Reboot your device after the installation is completed.

Your Nexus 4 has been successfully updated to Android 4.4.2.
