The Android 4.4 update for the Nexus 7 tablets started rolling out last week. We already saw how to install it manually on the Nexus 7 (2012) Wi-Fi edition tablet. Let us now see how to install it on the 3G version. The update is already rolling out via OTA but if you are having problems downloading it or haven’t yet received it, you can follow the below steps to install it manually either via custom recovery or via ADB.

Pre-requisites and Backing up your Nexus 7 (2012):

Method 1 (via Custom Recovery):

Requirements:

Steps:

  1. Download the official Android 4.4 update zip file and copy it to the root of the internal storage of your device.
  2. Turn off the device and boot into bootloader mode. To do so, press and hold Volume Down, Volume Up and Power buttons. From there, boot into recovery.
  3. Now select “Install Zip”, then “Select Zip” and choose the official Android 4.4 update zip.
  4. After the installation is complete reboot your device.

You have successfully updated your Nexus 7 (2012) 3G version tablet to Android 4.4.

Method 2 (via ADB):

Requirements:

  • Nexus 7 (2012) 3G version tablet must be running on Android 4.3 JWR66Y or Android 4.4 KRT16O
  • OTA Survival must be disabled if you’re using SuperSU v1.69 or older
  • Android SDK installed on your computer
  • Official Android 4.4 KRT16S Update zip file (Download this file if you are on Android 4.3 JWR66Y / Download this file if you are on Android 4.4 KRT16O)

Steps:

  1. Download the official Android 4.4 update zip file to your computer.
  2. Reboot your device and while it is booting up, press and hold the Volume Down button.
  3. You will now see the fastboot menu. Keep on pressing the Volume Up button until you see Recovery and then press the Power button to enter it.
  4. An Android with a red exclamation point will now appear on the screen. Press Volume Up and Power buttons together and select “apply update from adb”.
  5. Connect your tablet to your computer via USB.
  6. Now go to the location where you downloaded the official Android 4.4 update zip file and open a command window there by pressing Shift button of the keyboard and Right Click button of your mouse.
  7. Type the following command if coming from Android 4.3 JWR66Y:
    adb sideload dd31ffbfbfde2d4825eb911b42de0f4fc428c58f.signed-nakasig-KRT16S-from-JWR66Y.dd31ffbf.zip

    Type the following command if coming from Android 4.4 KRT16O:
    adb sideload d0ce3a1f9f7e65dd632f2096b28a13530ac2813c.signed-nakasig-KRT16S-from-KRT16O.d0ce3a1f.zip

  8. The update will now be installed on your Nexus 7. After the installation is complete, reboot your device.

You have successfully updated your Nexus 7 (2012) 3G version tablet to Android 4.4.
