Google’s first tablet device was the Nexus 7 which was launched last year and ran on Android 4.1. It received an update to Android 4.3 later after its successor of the same name was launched earlier this year. And Google announced yesterday that its Wi-Fi edition would also receive the Android 4.4 update along with the Nexus 10 and the Wi-Fi edition of the Nexus 7 (2013). However, instead of waiting for an OTA update to arrive, you can manually install this update either via ADB or via a custom recovery. We already saw how to update the Nexus 7 (2013) Wi-Fi edition tablet to official Android 4.4. The steps involved in updating the Nexus 7 (2012) Wi-Fi edition tablet are similar to those as you can see below.

Method 1 (via Custom Recovery):

Steps:

  1. Download the official Android 4.4 update zip file and copy it to the root of the internal storage of your device.
  2. Turn off the device and boot into bootloader mode. To do so, press and hold Volume Down, Volume Up and Power buttons. From there, boot into recovery.
  3. Now select “Install Zip”, then “Select Zip” and choose the official Android 4.4 update zip.
  4. Reboot your device after the installation is complete.

You have successfully updated your Nexus 7 (2012) Wi-Fi version tablet to Android 4.4.

Method 2 (via ADB):

Steps:

  1. Download the official Android 4.4 update zip file to your computer.
  2. Reboot your device and while it is booting up, press and hold the Volume Down button.
  3. You will now see the fastboot menu. Keep on pressing the Volume Up button until you see Recovery and then press the Power button to enter it.
  4. An Android with a red exclamation point will now appear on the screen. Press Volume Up and Power buttons together and select “apply update from adb”.
  5. Connect your tablet to your computer via USB.
  6. Now go to the location where you downloaded the official Android 4.4 update zip file and open a command window there by pressing Shift button of the keyboard and Right Click button of your mouse.
  7. Type the following command:
    adb sideload 13088e35942c77e4752aa1fdf51d54472509b941.signed-nakasi-KRT16O-from-JWR66Y.13088e35.zip
  8. The update will now be installed on your Nexus 7. After the installation is complete, reboot your device.

You have successfully updated your Nexus 7 (2012) Wi-Fi version tablet to Android 4.4.

Note: The new Android Runtime (ART) is not included in the update for Nexus 7 and so users will have to do with the traditional Dalvik runtime.
